About Co-trimoxazole (Bactrim)
Co-trimoxazole (Bactrim) contains Co-trimoxazole (Sulfamethoxazole/Trimethoprim), a sulfonamide combination antibiotic prescribed for urinary tract, respiratory, and opportunistic infections including PCP prophylaxis. It provides effective bactericidal or bacteriostatic activity against the causative organisms of these infections.
Benefits of Co-trimoxazole (Bactrim)
- Broad Spectrum: Effective against common bacterial pathogens causing the target infections.
- Proven Efficacy: Clinically established antibiotic with decades of successful use.
- Oral Convenience: Available in oral formulation for outpatient treatment.
How Co-trimoxazole (Bactrim) Works
Trimethoprim inhibits dihydrofolate reductase and sulfamethoxazole inhibits dihydropteroate synthase — sequential enzymes in the bacterial folate synthesis pathway. Sequential blockade produces synergistic bactericidal action against susceptible organisms.
