About Losartan (Cozaar)
Cozaar contains Losartan, an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) used for hypertension and to reduce the risk of stroke in patients with hypertension and left ventricular hypertrophy. It is also indicated for diabetic nephropathy in patients with type 2 diabetes and hypertension.
Benefits of Losartan (Cozaar)
- Blood Pressure Control: Effectively reduces systolic and diastolic blood pressure.
- Kidney Protection: Slows progression of diabetic nephropathy in type 2 diabetes patients.
- Stroke Prevention: Reduces risk of stroke in hypertensive patients with LVH.
How Losartan Works
Losartan selectively blocks the AT1 angiotensin II receptor, preventing angiotensin II-mediated vasoconstriction and aldosterone secretion. This reduces peripheral vascular resistance, lowers blood pressure, and decreases renal tubular sodium reabsorption, providing both antihypertensive and renoprotective effects.
